Why are there so many plumbing leaks in the past 10 years?

Copper pipes were a great idea and perfectly appropriate for plumbing systems prior to the 1990s. However, since drinking water regulations changed in the 1990s, water is now harder on metal plumbing systems. The Safe Drinking Water Act (SDWA) of 1991 increased the sanitation of drinking water at the expense of being more damaging to metal plumbing systems. This altered water has been flowing in copper pipes for nearly 20 years, and has caused the current epidemic of plumbing problems.

Why do plumbing systems break down?

With the current epidemic of pinhole leaks and plumbing system failures across the US, this is a good question. The answer lies in the chemistry of the water itself. The water flowing through plumbing systems has a higher pH than the water did before 1991. Instead of using free chlorine, utility companies switched to a more stable compound known as chloramines. This causes drinking water to be more corrosive to metal plumbing systems (the chemicals make copper and metal pipes rust and corrode rapidly).

How long will new copper plumbing pipes last?

Unless copper pipes are lined with a protective epoxy, any type of copper or metal pipes could corrode within 5 years of installation.

Why did utility companies change the chemistry of the water in the 1990s?

Utility companies in the US had to switch the chemistry of drinking water in response to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) Safe Drinking Water Act (SDWA), and the Lead and Copper Rule (LCR) of 1991.

What is the advantage of an epoxy lining on plumbing pipes?

An epoxy lining is like a thin plastic liner that coats your pipes. It provides a long lasting shield between drinking water and your metal pipes. The epoxy lining prevents rust, corrosion, leaks, and other plumbing problems.

If I have my old copper pipes lined with epoxy, will they still need to be replaced in a few years?

No. Our epoxy lining (the CuraFlo™ Epoxy Pipe Lining System) can prevent the formation of corrosion and pinhole leaks for 50 to 75 years. When we install an epoxy lining, we will clean out your old copper pipes, repair them, and coat them with epoxy.
